Note, the important role draperies played in each of these scenarios.
A professional business woman was moving from a Country French style suburban home to a downtown condo in the Art Museum district of the city. The client requested her longtime decorator utilize some of the existing furnishings while fashioning a modern artsy vibe for her new residence.
To establish the look of a chic Parisian salon the decorator painted the walls a sophisticated greige hue. The new tufted sectional sofa and pair of 21st Century wingback chairs she specified contributed dramatic color contrast and ample seating for her guests. The floor to ceiling hung drapery panels in a watercolor pattern installed in the corners of the room define and dress the wall of windows.
An existing folding screen supplies the perfect transition between spaces. Black and brown furniture...an on-trend social cabinet, a square cocktail table and low media credenza....enrich the scheme but also relate to the earthy tones of the adjoining dining area. The decorator completed the urban ambiance with a blend of new accessories and her client's cherished art for a tres au courant look!
A MASTERFUL DINING ROOMMAKEOVER
In this case, the decorator was charged with completely redoing and formalizing the dining room in her client's newly purchased home.
The inspiration for the room's transformation began with the selection of a silver drum shaded crystal chandelier. The decorator's smart suggestion to go from a rectangular wood to a round glass top table visually expanded the space and freed up a wall for a serving piece. In addition to adding a dramatic design element to the space, the functional and fashionable console table and mirror also serve to balance the windows on the opposite side.
Picking up on the color of the newly painted gold walls the decorator chose a luxurious gold and beige damask to cover the tufted back chairs. To complement the pattern on the chairs and add importance to the pair of windows she installed horizontal faux silk stripe draperies beyond and above their frames. The decorator performed a masterful job of bringing an attractive face to the once tired appearance of this dining room.
WORKING AROUND A ROOM'S PROPORTIONS
One of our DDI clients was moving to a new townhouse. Her main goal was to make the relatively small two-story family room feel warm and inviting. Since this was the only sitting area on the main floor the decorator had to accommodate guests with sufficient seating, but in a scale that would not overwhelm the modest square footage, and substantial enough to suit the high ceiling.
To give the client the refined and feminine feel she was after the decorator chose a comfortable sofa and chair with soft lines in a rich gray velvet. Further seating was provided by a second armchair in a lighter gray print. The large round ottoman can be used as a cocktail table, but also offers another seat option.
For the needed punch of color to the overall gray palette, the decorator picked a beautiful shade of rust for the ottoman, pillows and accessories, and found just the right transitional gray wool rug with rusty accents. She designed the gray and white patterned draperies to soften the effect of the cathedral ceilings and tall windows while warming their impact. Bringing all of these individual elements together is the decorator's choice of a paint color with warm undertones.
